Ankh Egyptian, Ivory, 18th – 20th Dynasty (1570 B.C. - 1070 B.C.) The ankh was the Egyptian symbol of life. The vertical shaft represents the length of the Nile River. The Oval Top is the Nile delta. Since the prosperity and survival of the Egyptian people was completely dependant upon the Niles floods, this was a natural linkage. The horizontal bar is the bridge between the land of the living (the east) and the world of the dead (the west). This specimen was recovered at Memphis.
