07_egypt_scarab

Scarab Amulet Egyptian, Bone, 18th – 20th Dynasty (1570 B.C. - 1070 B.C.) Because of its habit of laying its eggs in balls of the manure, the Egyptians believed the Dung Beetle was literally reborn from the Sun (the symbol of Ra). Therefore, Scarab amulets were general woven into the web of beads on mummies to aid in the rebirth process. The bottom of the scarab would also contain a magic spell to further the process. This particular amulet has the following inscribed: A beetle, a burial tomb, and the Solar disk of Ra with twin Uraeus (cobras) protecting the body from desecration.
